Who We Are

Daylight Mind is a young, energetic company with over 100 employees all working together to make possible everything we do.  Below, we profile just a few of our key personnel.  We welcome you to come in and meet these folks and the rest of our extraordinary crew! 

Colin Finn and Millay Stevens - Owners of Daylight Mind Colin Finn - Executive founder, co-owner, and fearless leader

Colin is a business leader and entrepreneur with eighteen years of experience in the specialty coffee industry.  He has opened and designed over thirty cafes in five countries working in small independents, large franchise groups and multi-unit, diversified coffee businesses.  His recent experience includes leading a mid-sized coffee roasting firm in Melbourne, Australia through a planned succession process as CEO.  He holds an MBA and Masters of HR from Murdoch University.  Colin acts as the main architect of the company and manages the business and hospitality elements on a day-to-day basis.

Millay Stevens - Operations, co-owner, and wonder woman

Millay has a broad range of experience in finance and administration.  Her expertise includes financial data analysis, process optimization and ERP system software.  She has an MBA from Curtin University with a focus on finance, risk management and process engineering.  Millay champions the back office systems of the company and acts as financial controller.

Shawn Steiman- Owner, Chief Science Officer at Daylight Mind Shawn Steiman, Ph.D. - Chief science officer, headmaster, co-owner, and smiley face

Shawn is a coffee scientist, author, and consultant. He's a graduate of Oberlin College as well as the University of Hawai‘i (graduate work in coffee science). His coffee research has included coffee production, entomology, ecology, physiology, biochemistry, organoleptic quality, and brewing. Aside from being an owner of Daylight Mind, he also owns Coffea Consulting, a coffee-centric consulting firm. Shawn regularly presents seminars, workshops, and tastings for both public and private events. He has authored numerous articles in scientific journals, trade magazines, newsletters, and newspapers. He's even been known to star in Korean coffee commercials. If you have too much spare time, you can see Shawn's CV here. He is the author of The Hawai‘i Coffee Book: A Gourmet's Guide from Kona to Kaua‘i, is a co-editor and author of Coffee: A Comprehensive Guide to the Bean, the Beverage, and the Industry, and is author of The Little Coffee Know-It-All: A Miscellany for growing, roasting, and brewing, uncompromising and unapologetic. Brian Webb - Roasting Department ManagerBrian Webb – Roasting Department Manager, Coffee Educator

Brian fell in love with coffee while studying philosophy and cognitive science at North Carolina State University. He is an SCA Certified Instructor and has worked in specialty coffee since 2007. When not too busy roasting delicious coffee, Brian also teaches classes in our school and works closely with local coffee producers and other industry professionals to promote Hawaii's participation in the international Specialty coffee community.

Brit Horn - Wholesale Accounts ManagerBrit Horn – Coffee Roaster, Wholesale Accounts Manager

Brit is our second-in-command in the roasting department. She came to Daylight Mind by way of a coffee farming gig in South Kona in early 2015. Starting out as a roastery assistant, she has rapidly grown into bigger and better things including roaster, salesperson, and now wholesale accounts manager. Though much of her time these days is spent interacting with clients and traveling across the Big Island and to O'ahu, she still spends a good deal of time roasting coffee, leading public cuppings, and conducting training for our local clients. Brit is an SCA Certified Instructor and will soon be completing the SCA green coffee buyer certification.

Julia Berman Julia Berman - Director of Events and dazzling fairy

Love lured Julia to the Big Island and, once here, she quickly and seamlessly found her place at Daylight Mind. Along with an infectious smile, she brings her hospitality education and years of event planning experience in Sonoma wine country to Kona coffee country. A planner by nature, she delights in the weeks and months of event design and preparation that end in the successful blossoming of the actual event. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her fiance and their two dogs at their favorite secluded beach.
